Primary Sector

The Primary Sector Special Interest Group was formed to provide a primary perspective in TESOLANZ. Some issues noted by ESOL teachers working in Primary schools around New Zealand are:

  • That the face of ESOL teaching has changed over the last few years, partly influenced by the number of International Students attending our schools.
  • The positive effects of Cluster Groups as much needed Professional Development.
  • The need for curriculum support for ESOL teachers, and support for NESB students in their mainstream classes.
  • The increasing number of students who are coming to NZ with special learning needs as well as their NESB needs.

If you are a TESOLANZ member with an interest in these or other issues affecting ESOL teaching in a NZ Primary school, contact the Primary SIG Coordinator, Karen Cebalo to be added to the Primary SIG emailing list.

2010 Notices

Reminder: registration for the next CLESOL conference opens on 1st March.

If you've never been to a CLESOL conference they are without exception extremely valuable, and over the past few years have become more and more Primary-orientated. Pauline Gibbons in particular will be well known to Primary teachers and is one of the keynote speakers. (Learning to Learn in a Second Language (1993); Scaffolding Language, Scaffolding Learning: Teaching ESL Students in the Mainstream Classroom (2002); English Learners, Academic Literacy and Thinking: Learning in the Challenge Zone (2009).

Also consider presenting a paper yourself. Many of the most valuable presentations in previous conferences have been practical or action research papers presented by ESOL teachers currently working in the field.
