Inaugural Lecture by Professor Martin East
Tuesday 30 October 2018 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Speaker: Professor Martin East

Title: We must really learn to speak other languages. So why is language learning languishing?

Professor Martin East is an experienced teacher of languages at both secondary and tertiary levels. He currently works in Applied Linguistics and Language Teaching in the School of Cultures, Languages and Linguistics, Faculty of Arts. His professorial inaugural lecture will be held at 6.00 p.m., on Tuesday 30th October, at the University of Auckland's Neon Foyer, Faculty of Engineering, 20 Symonds Street, followed by a drinks reception. This will be a jointly-hosted occasion that recognises his ten years working in pre-service teacher education (School of Curriculum and Pedagogy, EDSW) alongside his appointment, from this year, to the School of Cultures, Languages and Linguistics (Arts).
The title of his lecture is topical and relevant especially in the light of the Te Reo revitalisation, that is happening around Aotearoa.
Martin would love to see you to share this experience with him in this occasion of marking his professorship. Click here for further details and registration information

There are a couple of announcements to make ahead of the biennial CLESOL conference in early October. Firstly, AKTESOL still have two early bird registrations for CLESOL for two members to take advantage of. Details on how to apply for this subsidy are included in the notices section AKTESOL CLESOL SUBSIDY. Secondly, AKTESOL has three remits for inclusion in the agenda of the TESOLANZ AGM that will be held at 4:45pm on Saturday 6 October 2018 during the conference. Please read about the AKTESOL REMITS below and send in any queries or points for discussion to our AKTESOL chair Petronella Townsend.

AKTESOL has purchased two CLESOL early bird registrations. If you are an AKTESOL member, you can apply for a subsidy. Applications for the subsidy have to be in by 24th August. Click on the link for application details. The date for successful applicants to be advised has been extended to Friday 21st September.

1. Secondary class sizes. Remit: That TESOLANZ publish a position statement on the impact of class size on pedagogy for EAL learners in all sectors

2. Ongoing support for EAL learners in mainstream study. Remit: That TESOLANZ publish a position statement on the need for ongoing language support for EAL learners in their mainstream study.

3. Concern among members about the casualisation of the ESOL teaching profession. Remit: That TESOLANZ make a very strong position statement about the need to retain qualified, experienced ESOL teachers and that they have permanent contracts.

AGM Voting: Only branches hold votes. Each branch holds one vote per full 10 members, and the number of votes held by each branch will be announced by email one week before the AGM and at the AGM itself.
We would like to thank Roger Barnard for giving up his time and sharing his knowledge at our last event. His slide presentation "From reflective practice to action research" can be downloadedhere.

Welcome to our newest committee member Leslie Robertson. I did the first CELTA in New Zealand in 1989 and have been a language teacher ever since. I have taught at all levels from pre-school to post-graduate in Italy and New Zealand. I have been self-employed and also worked for tertiary institutions and private language schools. My fields of interest are: academic writing, speaking, and assessment in the tertiary sector. Leslie Robertson

The final Professional Development event will be held on Saturday, 01 December (topic and venue to be confirmed). Keep an eye out for this announcement but keep the date free!

23rd August at Unitec: AKTESOL Lecture by Roger Barnard

On Thursday the 23rd of August AKTESOL members gathered at Unitec to listen to and share the expertise of Professor Roger Barnard on ‘Reflective Practice’. It was a very successful and interesting presentation. It was also very practical in that he explored the ‘reflective cycle’ and ways in which teachers could systematically reflect while planning and teaching and what they could do after lessons. The PowerPoint (view it here) gives a clear summary and his abstract (click here) provides extra background information. Professor Barnard’s book “Reflective Practice” – Voices from the field - Edited by Roger Barnard and Jonathon Ryan, provides even more detail.
