Abstract
Formative assessment is widely recognised as vital for effective teaching but remains
underused in English language classrooms, often due to unclear conceptualisation
and inappropriate implementation. This one-hour seminar bridges theory and practice
by combining core formative assessment principles with the potential of generative AI.
The session has two parts: first, it clarifies the “why,
” “what,
” and “how” of formative
assessment using real classroom examples and professional development cases;
second, it demonstrates how AI tools can support teachers in identifying learning
goals, analysing student work, generating personalised feedback, and suggesting
next-step activities. Designed for ESL teachers of all technical backgrounds, the
seminar offers practical, immediately applicable strategies. Participants will leave with
a clear understanding of formative assessment and actionable ways to enhance it
using AI in their own teaching contexts.
