Speaker: Professor John Macalister

Abstract: This talk is a reflection on a month spent as a humanitarian volunteer teaching English in Ukraine. After many years of work as a language teacher, teacher educator, and academic, I felt reasonably confident in my professional capability. Spoiler alert: little did I know …

Biodata

John Macalister is an Emeritus Professor of Applied Linguistics at Te Herenga Waka, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, and co-author of Language Curriculum Design and Teaching EFL/ESL Reading and Writing, both with Professor Paul Nation. He has worked as a teacher, teacher trainer, and course designer on projects in Kiribati, Namibia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vanuatu, Vietnam,  Kiribati, Timor-Leste, Latin America, Saudi Arabia and New Zealand.

In addition, in late 2025 he spent a month as a humanitarian volunteer in Ukraine.
